Dog Alert For Kirkland Dog Owners

In Kirkland WA on May 28, 2009 at 12:06 pm

Do you have a dog and do you take your dog out for walks in Kirkland?  As a diehard dog lover and dog owner, I thought everyone should know about this safety concern.photo of a dog

Karen Story, The Kirkland Highlands Association President sent this email out to the neighborhood:

A neighbor says that her two new puppies incurred some serious vet bills after having to spend several days in the Animal ER from ingesting toxic mushrooms while out on a walk. They thought we had lost one but the magic of medicine (and a very quick reaction when they noticed some odd behavior) saved them both. She says that the real nasty mushrooms are darkish, with rather flat tops and get slimey after a rain.

Google says:

Dogs who like to “graze” will sometimes eat wild mushrooms along with lawn grasses, leading to mushroom poisoning. Dogs can sometimes become ill by just licking a poisonous mushroom. Also, some dogs, like some people, are allergic to edible, normally safe mushrooms.

Always watch for mushrooms in areas where you walk your dogs or where they run and play. Be especially cautious of parasol-shaped mushrooms and all small brown mushrooms. Check your yard each morning, especially in damp weather, before letting your dog outside. New mushrooms can appear overnight. Whenever you find mushrooms in your yard, dig them up. Smashing or kicking them spreads the spores and even more will grow.

It can be very difficult to tell the difference between poisonous and edible mushrooms.

If you see your dog eating mushrooms, remove any pieces from the dog’s mouth, save the pieces for identifiation, and call your veterinarian.

If symptoms have already begun, take your dog to a nearby emergency veterinary hospital immediately.

Has anyone taken a photo of these mushrooms?  If so, I can post it on the blog, so people know what to look for.

Another Wonderful Sunday by Lake Washington in Kirkland, Washington

In Kirkland News, Kirkland WA on June 24, 2008 at 9:25 pm

Okay, so the real truth is the sun does not come out in the Seattle area often until late in the day. So when we hit the long days of the summer, we get some beautiful time with slightly gray days turning to some wonderful sunny afternoons and evenings.  Last Sunday was such a day that it merited a  stroll along “the boulevard” and the lake.  Lots of peopleand dogs were out enjoying the views of the water and Seattle, enjoying each other, and  generally relaxing.

A Chance to Write About Kirkland, WA, Real Estate, Kids, Dogs, and Seniors in The Kirkland Reporter

In Exploring Kirkland, Kirkland News, Kirkland WA on January 30, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Kirkland Reporter

I have Karen Story to blame.  It’s all her fault.  Karen turned me in to the Kirkland Reporter as a prime suspect in their search for local columnists.  I’ve been caught and now I am  doing some time as one of the Reporter’s (reporters?)  columnists.

Seriously, I am excited to be doing this. Truthfully, I jumped at the chance to write. I get to talk about our city, our neighborhood, development, real estate, kids, dogs, seniors, disaster preparedness, parks, area events, and not necessarily in any order.

Writing for the Reporter is a natural extension of my blogging.  When I started to blog last year, I had no idea where it would lead.  But I can say now,  blogging has given me a new appreciation for Kirkland and The Highlands.  I’ve had the opportunity to see our city in a different light. (You may have seen me running around town taking lots of photos.)  I’m paying more attention to what’s happening, meeting lots of interesting people, and doing a lot of fun things in Kirkland.  Blogging, and writing, are both an opportunity for me to combine the things I love to talk about and do.

Through this blog and the Reporter, my goal is to highlight topics that are important to  people in The Highlands and  Kirkland.  Some topics will be more serious, some will be fun, but hopefully, all will have some meaning.

Now here is your chance to put your two cents in.  If you have a topic of interest you think people should know about, please let me know, and I will try to write about it.  You can comment on this blog or send me an email at debra@debrasinick.com .  After all, this blog’s for you!

KDOG Just Wants Kirkland’s Dogs to have fun in Kirkland.

In Kirkland News on January 4, 2008 at 11:25 pm

marymoor-park-dogsplllllayingbest.jpgWhen I stopped at Dooley’s Dog House the other day to pick up dog food for my Yorkie, I found out there is a grass roots effort to develop a dog park in Kirkland, a place for our four legged friends and their owners to meet and greet.

Dog parks are high on the list of amenities home owners appreciate having in their community. I wrote about the latest ”hot” amenities in a previous posting on my eastside blog. Kirkland is noted for its beaches and access to the lake, its great restaurants, parks, and galleries. All these things contribute to higher home values in Kirkland.

When we Realtors look for homes for our buyers, we look at all the location offers.  Homes with great streets, good commutes, access to shopping, good schools, parks and dog parks add value to daily living and dollars to home prices.  From a real estate point of view, a city/neighborhood dog park can only add value to living in Kirkland for everyone.

Think of all the people (and dogs) you know who would love to have a dog park.  A dog park gives people, and their dogs, a safe place to enjoy each other and the outdoors.  Marymoor Park has one of the best dog parks anywhere and is a boon to the City of Redmond and King County.

S.OD.A., a group founded in the 1990’s to keep open space for dogs, has been helping a local group in Kirkland lobby for a dog park. The Kirkland group is called KDOG, Kirkland Dog Off Leash Group. The group made a presentation to the Parks Board in November.

If you are interested and want to support the effort, you can sign up for the next meeting, which is this Tuesday evening at the Starbuck’s in Juanita at 7 PM. The next step for the dog park is to develop by-laws and to register a non-profit group with the state. Let the City Council know of your interest by showing your support either by signing the petition, volunteering or donating a few dollars.

Hope to see you at the dog park.
