It’s Volunteer Time at Seattle/Eastside’s Hopelink

In Kirkland News, Kirkland WA, services on February 27, 2009 at 2:13 pm

Did you hear President Obama speak the other night? I was  impressed with the direction he plans to move the country.  I like his emphasis on education, health, and energy, all areas which are critical to our country’s  future growth.    His mantra is community involvement and activism.  I couldn’t agree more.  We hope and expect government to help improve the quality of our lives, but we as individuals must do our share to help.  It’s up to us as citizens to contribute collectively to our well-being.  On that note, here’s the information from the most recent Hopelink press release asking for volunteers the needs of the Kirkland/Eastside community.

Bellevue, Wash. – Hopelink, a 38-year-old nonprofit agency helping families, senior citizens and people with disabilities in east and north King County, needs more volunteers at its centers in Redmond, Bellevue, Kirkland, Shoreline, Bothell and Carnation.

Hopelink relies upon volunteers for such jobs as sorting food in its food banks, helping adults learn to read or do basic math or study for the GED exams, delivering food to homebound clients, or answering phones and helping with administrative tasks. Last year, more than 1,950 volunteers donated nearly 60,000 hours to help Hopelink fulfill its mission of assisting people in need to make lasting change in their lives.

With the large-scale National Letter Carrier’s Food Drive coming up on Saturday, May 9, Hopelink will particularly need volunteers to help pack, receive, and sort food donations at area post offices and Hopelink food banks. Individuals, families and groups are invited to help with the large volume of food that the drive is expected to generate.

Hopelink continues to need new volunteers over age 16 and welcomes anyone interested to an orientation meeting to learn more about Hopelink and its many volunteer opportunities:

· Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at Hopelink’s Adult Education Department office, 15015 Main Street, Suite 206 in Kelsey Creek Plaza (across from the main Hopelink center) in Bellevue. An afternoon orientation will start promptly at 1:00 p.m. and end at 2:30 p.m. An evening orientation will start promptly at 7:00 p.m. and end at 8:30 p.m.

· Thursday, March 5, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at Hopelink’s Bothell center, 18220 96th Ave. NE in Bothell.

· Wednesday, March 11, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. at Hopelink’s Carnation center, 31957 Commercial Street in Carnation.

Where Did Amazon Fresh Go On Seattle’s Eastside?

In Kirkland News, Kirkland WA, services on March 26, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Amazon Fresh is Gone

I was driving down Central Way in Kirkland, Washington this morning and noticed Amazon Fresh was gone.  When did that happen and where did they go?

They just arrived in September of last year.

Amazon Fresh

From the Amazon Fresh website, it looks as if the company has eliminated the plan for grocery pick up.  The plan is to deliver groceries on people’s door step. I know they’re still here as I just saw an Amazon Fresh truck in Kirkland the other day.

Any news on Amazon Fresh’s game plan?

My analysis of this week’s real estate buzz:

There is one new listing this week, priced at $2,150,000.  The price of this home brings the median and average prices up for the week.  This new listing is a 3 year old home with a fabulous view.

Two price reductions happened in the new neighborhood over off of 116th.  The reductions were for less than $1000.  One of the homes in the same neighborhood had a price increase.

The TOMK, temporarily off the market home in Highland Creste for $699,950, is now back on the market with its floors redone.

The home in Hidden Hills reduced to $579,000 received an offer this week.  A mid-century modern home listed for $699,950 also received an offer.

The condo priced at $549,950 that had received an offer is now past its inspection and is now pending,

A pretty straight-forward week in the Highlands!

It’s the Last Few Days to Help Kirkland Jr High Students Raise Money for Computers, Books, and Materials

In Kirkland News, Schools, services on September 25, 2007 at 10:30 am

Nail salonI stopped by one my favorite nail salons last week

 Pedicure

and not only received a great pedicure, but found out about the latest fundraiser for Kirkland Junior High

 Kirkland Jr High

Tiffany Dao, whose Mom, Tracy,  owns the nail salon, is actively raising money for the drive. She’s a seventh grader at Kirkland Jr. High.  The school is hoping to raise $70,000 for materials and computer equipment.

According to Tiffany, if the students meet the goal of $70,000, then the kids get to see the Vice-Principal, Mr. Mott,  shave his head.  It’s a win-win situation.  The kids get to actively learn how to raise money and the school has more  money to invest in equipment for the kids. If the students reach the school’s goal, they can have fun watching the vice principal shave his head!  Sounds good to me.

You can contribute online to the cause. You can also call 1-800-847-7898 and make a donation.  You need to know a student at the school and the school code before contributing, so your money will tagged for the right student and school.

The students are selling all kinds of things.  Besides the usual magazines, there are some great things for sale.  I bought a stadium blanket (so the next time I go to Chateau St Michelle for a concert, I will have something to sit on), a gadget holder and  first aid kit for the car.

I wish all the students at Kirkland Jr High the best and will be rooting for them to make their goal of $70,000.

Amazon FreshLooks who’s come to Kirkland!  Amazon Fresh, one of the latest ventures of Amazon.com,  has secured space down at 268 Central Way for one of its latest marketing ventures, home delivery of groceries.   Amazon Fresh offers you three choice for purchasing your groceries:

1.  Overnight delivery- shop while you sleep!  Your groceries will be left on your doorstep in temperature controlled containers. The Highlands is in the delivery area as not all neighborhoods are just yet.

2.  Next day delivery: receive your groceries during a one hour time slot of your choice.

3.  Local pick-up station:  Pick up your groceries in downtown Kirkland.  The new delivery station is right on Central Way just as you head past 3rd St heading west. Hours are from 10 AM-8 PM.

I spoke with customer service at Amazon Fresh today and you must sign up with Amazon to get a code to access the website. If you already use Amazon, as many of us do, you have the access code to get to the site.

Be one of the first to try the service.  If you try the service, tell us what you think.
