Kirkland Highlands-A Look Back at 2008 in the Neighborhood

In Earth Day-Goat Project, Extreme Makeover Home Project, Kirkland WA on January 16, 2009 at 12:03 am

Can you remember all the things the Kirkland’s Highlands neighborhood had going on over the past year and then some? I’ve been blogging about The Kirkland Highlands for exactly two years now and I’d say things in the Highlands started heating up in September, 2007.  When I stop to think about it, I’m amazed at how much has happened in the neighborhood.  Actually, it’s kind of fun to think about and something those who live in Kirkland and the Kirkland Highlands should be proud of.  Here’s some photos of most, but not all that happened in the Kirkland Highlands over the last year.

The food drive was a great success for Hoeplink, even though the Kirkland Highlands did not win. It was the effort that counted.  Our neighborhood made a valient effort and congratulations to all.  Make 2009 a great year!

Happy First Anniversary to the Extreme Makeover Home in The Kirkland Highlands

In Extreme Makeover Home Project, Kirkland News, Kirkland WA, Kirkland, WA Real Estate on October 13, 2008 at 6:45 am

It’s been a year since Kirkland, Washington’s Highlands neighborhood was abuzz with The Extreme Makeover TV program.  It was a great week in which our neighborhood and a  deserving neighbor were spotlighted.  The city of Kirkland, the neighborhood, and the TV show bonded together to provide a new home to the Chapin    family.  It was quite an experience to see the neighborhood participate in such an event.  The entire block, including the neighbor’s yards,  was transformed into a TV set and staging area for building the new home.   It was a massive effort between neighborhood support, community and home building, and Hollywood.  You can follow the Extreme Makeover project from start to finish.

The Kirkland Highlands 15 Minutes of Fame in The Seattle Times

In Exploring Kirkland, Extreme Makeover Home Project, Kirkland News, Kirkland WA, Kirkland, WA Real Estate on September 15, 2008 at 1:20 pm

Did you see the article in last week’s Seattle Times highlighting the Kirkland Highlands?  I was out of town at the time, but have managed to snag a copy.  I thought the reporter, Linda Hughes, did a great job communicating the wonderful flavor of our community.  There’s a wonderful synergy here with neighbors helping neighbors with the development of Cedar View Park, the Extreme Makeover Home, and the work on the Cotton HIll Park trail.

Plus, our quiet part of Kirkland is only seconds from downtown restaurants and galleries and the all important Lake Washington.

Here’s a copy of the article: Seattle Times Kirkland Highlands article

The highlights of the neighborhood  for me are:

  • The camaraderie of the neighborhood.
  • The eclectic feel of the streets and the homes.
  • The variety of housing styles and price ranges.
  • The proximity to downtown Kirkland restaurants, shops, galleries, and other conveniences.
  • Lake Washington nearby.
  • Easy commute to Bellevue, Redmond, and Seattle.

Extreme Makeover TV show and the Chapin Family Give Back to Kirkland WA’s Hopelink

The Kirkland Performance Center was hopping on Sunday night the 18th.  People came to support Hopelink and the Chapin family at a presentation of  the Extreme Makeover show of the Chapin residence.  As many Kirklanders know, The Chapins received a new home in October courtesy of  Extreme Makeover Home Edition and many local contractors, such as Doyle Construction.  The construction of the home was a huge community effort that continued with Sunday’s “performance” of the TV show.

volunteerorgextmakeoverbest.jpgext-makeover8lastdaybest.jpg Volunteers, contractors, and members of the cast of Extreme Makeover worked around the clock in rainy weather during the 8 day build.  The sign above shows  just a few of the many contractors that contributed their time, money, and services.

The Kirkland Performance Center sold over 300 tickets, netting about $422 in cash donations and a total of 6 crates of food for Hopelink.  Over on Rain City Guide, Ardell wrote a piece about Sunday’s performance.

The Chapin family utilitzed some of Hopelink’s services in the past when they were a bit more down on their luck.  They have been great to always remember Hopelink and this was a fine way to do it!

If you check out my previous blog postings on The Extreme Makeover home, you can follow the experience from beginning to end.  Photos have been posted which show the original home, the teardown, and the construction.  It was an exciting project and a neighborhood/city bonding experience.

Day 8.5-Extreme Makeover was Extremely Close to the Goal

In Extreme Makeover Home Project, Kirkland News on October 4, 2007 at 7:55 am

My trusty partner over at Windermere Real Estate/East,Inc, Angie Bondurant, went over to the site today, since I could not be there.  She hung in for about two hours and took some great photos.  The crew kept hoping they would be able to make it to the “Move the Bus” moment yesterday, but just could not do it.  So this morning between 9-11, the big moment will occur.

The new house number is up and is signed by the crew.

Day 8- Will Extreme Makeover in the Kirkland Highlands Make It Today?

Day 8

9 AM

Soon, we will know whether the team will make it.  I’m off to South Carolina for a family event, so I will miss “Move The Bus.”  I ‘ve asked several people to send me photos if they are able to make it to the event.  Feel free to email me any photos of today’s events and I will do my best to post a few for all to see.  I am happy to credit anyone who sends me a photo.

Wow, the energy at the site this morning is amazing!  It looks like there are at least hundred people at work.

As of last night, the time to move the bus was 8:30 PM.  Now, it is anybody’s guess.  The time keeps changing,  so if you are heading up to the site, you take your chances that you will hit it at the right time.

Check out the green extreme makeover website.  There is also a place to donate to the Chapin family.

The front is starting to look great!

3:30 PM

When I parked on a side street I ran into Jonathan Webber, the assistant location manager, doing a good deed.  He and a crew member were fixing a set of mail boxes that had been knocked down by an exuberant volunteer. ext-makeover-day-7fixmailboxbest.JPG

Jonathan told me the work had been really moving forward and the project should be completed tomorrow.  However, it may not be until 8:30 PM.   The family is returning tonight and will be staying at an undisclosed location.
